Grey Heron with Adder

I took the attached photos of a Grey Heron killing and eating an adder on the beach at Broadhaven a few days ago.  The heron was still present and feeding happily an hour or so later, so I guess no ill effects were suffered- by the heron at least.

  1. Great photos, herons are my fasvourite birds, they look so prehistoric.

  2. So far as I know, the venom has to be injected - via the fangs - into the body to do its job. So if the adder kept its mouth shut, the heron probably will be ok. What happens once the bird's gizzard has done its job, I don't know.
